Hydro Assist Fuel Cell – Do They Really Work?

There are many valid reasons to start looking for alternative fuels for your car. There is the looming danger of global warming, and of course, the most pressing as of the moment, the current global economic downturn. It is for these reasons that many people are looking for ways to lower their spending on fuels. While it may take more than just decades to totally eradicate the use of fossil fuels, there are existing technologies today that can help anyone improve the fuel economy of their car and extend the gas mileage per gallon.

Once of the more noteworthy technologies out there is Hydro Assist Fuel Cell (HAFC). HAFC is a combination of tested principles in the tradition of fuel saving technologies. It is available today, not merely available ‘years from now’ as others might lead you to believe.

Think of your car as an energy factory. It uses fuel in the engine to create energy that is transferred to the wheel that makes the car go. It also creates electrical energy from the alternator and the battery. HAFC rides on the energy created by the engine from the fuel to make the system more efficient.

HAFC technology works this way: workers extract a hydrogen-oxygen rich mixture from water by ionizing it with electricity from the battery. This energy rich gas (hydrogen-oxygen) is called Brown’s gas.

Brown’s gas extracted from water enriches the fuel mixture, allowing you to pump less fuel into the engine but get the same if not greater amount of burn, thus improving your vehicle’s gas mileage.

The HAFC system also uses powerful magnets to ionize the gasoline to break it down to its component molecules, allowing it to burn more rapidly and cleanly. It is a common mistake that gas burns. Gas does not burn, and what burns is the vapor that is on the surface of the gas. In unmodified engines, the fuel injector turns the gas into a fine mist. If this fine mist were to be turned actually into gas, and the components broken down to make it burn more, you will get a more explosive mixture, meaning more power, and less emissions, using less fuel. That is why cars that run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas are more economical, the fuel the reaches the engine is in gas form, easily burned and gives off less smoke.

Many studies have been made and claim that the HAFC system can produce gas savings of a minimum of 50%. This is a dramatic increase in mileage and fuel economy; though of course one can expect the savings to vary from vehicle to vehicle depending on the engine condition and the road usage the vehicle is subjected to.

What makes the HAFC System unique and special is that it will work on all current existing internal combustion engines. Unlike conversions to LPG fuel, there will be no need for major modifications, only added components that will not even add burden to the car. It is also compatible with other emerging technologies such as Pre-Ignition Catalytic Converter technology, which should up the fuel savings even more.

Residential Energy Credits That Could Change the Usa

After a period in the 1970’s where crude oil production reached its peak there was an energy crisis. In 1970 71 percent of the United States energy production was oil and natural gas. The government decided to provide taxpayers with an energy credit known as the Energy Act of 1978. The Energy Act of 1978 was intended to influence taxpayers to use other means of energy and conserve the limited resource of oil and gas. By 1979 a fourth of all energy domestic consumption in the United States was used for residential purposes. Americans can conserve energy and reduce their costs by insulating and constructing improvements on residences. Likewise our oil shortage today leaves Americans with the option to find other means of energy or pay the outrageous oil prices. The tax energy credit that was available in 2006 and 2007 were very similar to the credit enacted in 1978. The only question that needs to be answered is why the government has not renewed the credit for 2008 and the years proceeding 2009?

 

The Energy Act of 1978 provided a credit of expenditures made on or after April 20, 1977. The credit ceased for expenditures made after December 31, 1985 but could be carried forward until 1987. In 2006 and 2007 there was a similar credit for expenditures made on a US residence in the respective taxable year. Both credits were allowed for energy-conserving components installed in the primary residence of a taxpayer. For the credit that began in 1978 instillation such as caulking and weather-stripping of exterior doors and windows, clock-operated thermostats, and equipment that helped furnaces run more efficiently; fifteen percent of the expenditure was allowed up to the maximum credit of three hundred dollars. A maximum credit of five hundred dollars was allowed in 2006 and 2007 at ten percent of the expenditure costs of instillations reducing heat loss or gain. Instillation expenditures included exterior windows, exterior doors, and metal roofs, advanced main air circulation fans, natural gas, propane, or oil furnace or hot-water boiler. The instillation expenditures not only reduced costs on utility bills they conserved our natural resources.

 

Furthermore the credit applied to renewable energy sources. The credit beginning in 1978 included solar energy, energy from geothermal deposits, and wind energy expenditures. The costs incurred for expenditures of heating, cooling, or providing hot water were applicable for a maximum credit for 2,200 dollars, thirty percent for the first 2,000 dollars and twenty percent of the next 8,000 dollars. Expenditures that apply to the tax credit for 2006 and 2007 receive thirty percent of qualified solar panels and solar water heating equipment. A credit was allowed for each kind of expenditure with a maximum credit of 2,000 dollars. Another credit was available for qualified fuel cell power plants at thirty percent of costs up to 500 dollars per .5 kilowatt of capacity. While the credit’s dollar amounts may differ from the years stated the government wants to influence how we use our limited resources and provide rewards for alternative energy means.

 

As 2008 comes to a conclusion the residential energy credit has not been renewed. Our economy is in a recession, they price of fuel skyrocketed during the year, and the value of homes are rapidly declining. The residential energy credit could have enticed taxpayers to acquire other means of energy while increasing the value of their residences and creating jobs. In 1979 when America was hardly in a crisis as we are today there were over 4.8 million returns that contained residential energy credits totaling an amount over 480,000 dollars before any limitation. The residential energy credit should be available in every taxable year to influence what kind of energy Americans consume. Our future generations need a planet that is not completely depleted and guidance on which energy consumption will save our planet.

 

The residential energy credit will appear again in 2009. In 2009 a five hundred dollar maximum credit is placed on insulations, exterior windows and doors, non-solar water heaters, and certain heating and cooling equipment. The credit for tax years 2006, 2007, 2009 has a combined maximum of 500 dollars; where as the credit beginning in 1978 had a maximum credit of 300 dollars per year and a carryforward approach. There will be credits for solar water heating and photovoltaic systems. The tax credit for solar water heating systems will be thirty percent of expenditure costs with a maximum credit of 2,000 where as the credit for photovoltaic systems will not have a maximum credit. Thirty percent of cost of wind systems will apply for a credit up to 500 dollars for each .5 kilowatts capacity with a maximum credit of 4,000 dollars. Also fuel cells will receive thirty percent of costs for the system up to 1,500 for each .5 kilowatt capacity. It is clear that our environment is in need of preserving natural resources and our government must continue to influence taxpayers to invest in alternative energy resources.

Good Maintenance Equals Good Mileage

Check and replace the fuel filter on a regular basis.

As the fuel filter becomes clogged it decreases the flow of gas to the engine, therefore causing you to step harder on the gas and this in turn will result in the engine using more fuel in order to compensate.

Keep up with regular oil changes

When oil gets dirty it thickens the thicker it becomes the harder your engine has to work and the harder it works the more fuel you burn.

Do routine maintenance checks and tune ups.

Make sure that spark plugs, plug wires, cap, points, and rotor are all clean, not cracked or worn, and set correctly. Make sure you clean and gap your spark plugs properly. Dirty spark plugs can misfire. Check the timing on your engine. Also check that the transmission fluid is clean and filled to the proper level. All of these things can greatly affect you mpg.

Check to make sure your thermostat is operating properly.

If your thermostat is not working the way it should your engine will be running cold and a cold engine uses more fuel.

Make sure your speedometer is calibrated correctly.

If your speedometer is inaccurate you really have no way of knowing what your true fuel economy is for your vehicle.

Burnt fuel leaves behind all kinds of residues.

These residues or gunk will build up in your valves and combustion chambers, which again causes the engine to work harder using more fuel. Using an additive in your oil can clean your system from these residues and stop them from coming back. Over the past couple of months we have seen a rash of federal programs begin to take shape, for the preservation of huge corporations in desperate need of financial stability. We’ve got the mortgage crisis, as well as the “Big Thee” auto makers of the U.S. “Chrysler, Ford, and GMC”, who romanced the government by flying their corporate jets to DC at the price tag of $20,000 per jet for fuel costs alone. And now Matt Hartwig, a spokesman for the RFA. (Renewable Fuels Association) has stated that his Association has been speaking with President Elect Barrack Obamas team and other members of the staff at “Capitol Hill”, and that they are providing “Them” with some ideas on “how to craft the language of an economic recovery package”. A recovery package that would entail a $1 Billion credit facility that would allow producers to continue funding their current production and operations, and a $50 Billion federal loan guarantee program to finance investments in new renewable fuel production capacity, and supporting infrastructure. And a requirement that auto makers that receive federal aid, only produce models that can run on any blend up to 85% Ethanol, beginning with the 2010 model season.

Now, in my opinion there are a couple major problems with the deal that the RFA is putting forth for Obama and his team to consider. Over the past thirty years or so, the development of ethanol has pretty much been proven to be failure across the board and the reason for that is, when you make a gallon of ethanol it takes a whole heap of corn. In an effort to get an idea of how much corn it would take to get a gallon of ethanol, I stopped by healthandenergy.com where I read an article written by David Pimentel a Cornell University Agriculture Expert and I read his studies about the downfalls of producing ethanol. From his studies we know that it takes about 26.1 lbs of corn to produce 1 gallon of ethanol, and we also know that unfortunately ethanol provides fewer BTUs than fossil fuels, ethanol produces 77,000 BTUs and fossil fuels produce 131,000 BTUs. So then we have a huge loss of 54,000 BTUs when you make the switch to ethanol, and since ethanol takes more energy to produce than the energy that it contains, you have to pretty much double your fuel intake to get the same results as you would with fossil fuels.

And producing ethanol is only one failure among many, the mere cost of using the ethanol that we have produced in the united states already, has driven the price of food in Mexico upward considerably. Since we know that America will not allow an ethanol producer to cover 97% of it’s land area with corn fields, just so we wouldn’t have to purchase corn from other areas to have enough to supply the US with fuel. We need to consider the idea that ethanol is not the energy savior that we have been looking for. And now that we have about 30 years of scientific data that tells us that ethanol is not, nor will it ever be a good alternative to current fossil fuels, those producers want the US Government to give them $1Billion to pay their bills now, and a further $50Billion to help them grow later. I think that this “Idea” that the RFA is pitching on capitol hill is nothing more than proof that the “Bailout Package” is just a new and stupid way for the US government, to throw money away. I think that the worst part of the RFA pitch, is that they want the Government to make a rule that says, that any auto manufacturer that receives aid from the Federal Government, can only produce vehicles that run on an 85% ethanol blend or higher. My friends this is a horrible business plan. We are talking about a business that has a 30 year failure rate, and a business that knows it. They already receive a huge portion of their funding through Federal subsidies, and now all they need to do to complete their free ride, is force the American people to purchase their products by making US auto makers produce cars that only run on their products. That’s not “Free market” business, that’s not the American way. When did we become a society that rewards failure? For instance, earlier this week Bush and the capitol hill club decided that the best way to move foreword with the bailout package for the “Big 3” was to allow them to have it, as long as they promise to write a business plan that will turn their profitability around within 90 days.

Now I generally don’t have much faith in the US government running businesses, and forcing practices on large companies, because I believe in freedom. I don’t want big brother government to tell me which TV to purchase, or which light bulb to buy for that matter. But more and more as we move forward, our government is finding new and glorious ways to purchase our freedoms, and take them away from us. If we allow our government to continue this kind of spending, spending on businesses that have nothing more than failure to bring to the table, we will be in more “Horrible standings” than if we had let those companies alone to begin with. People seem to think that these auto makers are just to big to fail, and that if we allow their failure, we allow ourselves to fail as a nation. Friends, we cannot let ourselves believe this nonsense. We cannot nationalize a business just because it is failing, it will continue to fail. I think we all know what needs to happen with these three auto makers… We need to allow them to go bankrupt! From what I have seen in the mass media, there is a huge fear that once these guys go bankrupt, we will never see them again! That is just not true, and we can see the evidence in other companies that have gone bankrupt. For instance, Texaco Oil went bankrupt and bounced back stronger than ever, Pacific Power also, and if you still don’t believe me look at Brown and Coles Stores here in Whatcom county. Brown and Coles went bankrupt not too long ago, they trimmed off the fat, looked at their interests and labor contracts, and hit the reset button. And guess what? We still get to enjoy shopping for good deals at all Cost Cutters, and Food Pavilions all over the county. The simple truth is this. If we really want to do these companies that keep failing some good. We need to allow the market to run it’s course! If these companies go bankrupt, I know exactly what will happen! They will go to bankruptcy hearings, just like everyone else has to, while there they will look over their financial interests and labor contracts. They will cut the fat off of some of their contracts and entitlement programs, liquidate the fat that they trimmed off, and then get right back to work. It has been proven time and time again, all over the free market system. I say that if you want to help these companies, fine! Let the free market and bankruptcy courts deal with them, but don’t let these companies take our nation down with them. If we allow these kinds of things to keep happening, I can guarantee you, that the “Big 3” are not the only businesses, that the government will find in this market to dump all of our resources into. Using the government to pay for our mistakes isn’t being responsible… It’s just passing the bill over to Daddy at the restaurant. And someday, daddy’s going to run out of money.

Energy Performance Certificates Scotland – Basics Concepts

The requirements affecting Scotland for the provision of an Energy Performance Certificate when constructing a commercial building came into effect from 1st May 2007. The requirement for an Energy Performance Certificate when selling or leasing to prospective buyers or tenants of a commercial building exceeding 1,000 sq/m came into effect on the 4th January 2009.

Implementation of the EPC directive in the UK

Despite the fact that the passing of the directive to legislation in the UK proceeded with few real problems, its implementation has been more difficult.

Officially, all points outlined in the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive were intended to have been implemented by 1st October 2008. However, the government has decided to delay enforcement of Energy Performance Certificate legislation for buildings over 1,000 sq/m meaning that landlords and public authorities have until January 2009 to organise themselves.

Background to Energy certificate rating

It is the European Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD) passed in 2003 which has ultimately given rise to the UK government’s stringent legislation on energy conservation for commercial buildings.

The directive permits member states to implement it as they deem appropriate, provided they meet five key requirements. All requirements are intended to reduce CO2 buildings emmissions into the atmosphere. All parts of the directive were to be passed by member governments by 2006.

1) Certification

All buildings A certificate of a building’s energy performance (EPC) has to be shown to the prospective buyer or tenant at the time a building is sold, bought or rented. The ten year certificate must identify potential improvements to the building’s energy performance. Article 7 also discusses the methodology, data collection and benchmarks as well as the legal standards to be used.

Public Buildings Buildings over 1,000 sq m occupied by organizations providing public services are required to present a certificate displaying energy use (DEC).

2) Inspection

Article 8 – All boilers between 20 and 100kW burning non-renewable fuel have to be inspected every two years. Whole heating systems with boilers older than fifteen years have to be inspected and advice on upgrades provided. Advice on replacement boilers must also be provided.

Article 9 – Regular inspection of air conditioning systems over 12 kW must be carried out. An examination of an air conditioner’s fitness of purpose to its environment must be given as well as advice on improvement/replacement or alternative solutions.

3) Experts

5) Minimum EP Requirements

Article 4 – Setting of minimum energy performance requirements

These must be set based on details outlined in Article 3. Member states can differentiate between new and existing buildings, take account of indoor climate, ventilation, local conditions and age of the building, Energy performance requirements must be applied according to Articles 4 & 5. Certain types of building can be excluded, including monuments, places of worship and temporary buildings.

Article 5 – New Buildings

These must meet requirements outlined in Article 4. New buildings over 1,000 sq/m must examine feasibility of CHP, district heating, heat pumps and decentralised energy fired by renewable sources.

Article 6 – Upgrades & Refurbishments

Buildings member states must ensure that buildings over 1,000 sq/m must be upgraded to meet minimum requirements when they are refurbished, insofar as this is feasible. Member states shall set their own minimums. Renovation can refer to the whole or the part or a system within a building.
