  • When do you think clean energy will become mainstream?

Posted by admin on March 10th, 2010 and filed under alternative energy | 4 Comments »

By clean energy, I mean forms of energy such as solar, nuclear, hydroelectric, etc. And by mainstream, I mean providing at least fifty percent of all the energy. I’m just curious as to what other people who may know more about this issue than me think. I assume it won’t be at least for 40 or 50 years since we, or at least America, is way too slow and lazy to make an extremely beneficial change such as switching to clean energy. What do you all think?

Pretty much agree totally with you….40-50 yr.s seems like the breaking point for this petroleum/fossil fuel era…..and it’s greedy corporate power czars.Of course there are still plenty of fellow humans out there that believe in capitalist profit at all costs…until some ultimate world crisis forces them to actually "think" a bit more than a few days of gluttony ahead. You see the US right now(the last several years) taking claim to the middle east oil reserves in hopes of perpetuating their "all is well" oil lifestyle. There are so many clamps/powers/propaganda of control right now leading the sheep to slaughter….it’s gonna take some kind of real awakening in consciousness and perhaps catastrophe or revolution for this present gridlocked US political, environmental, egalitarian system to change. We are lazy as heck.We have everything to save the world..resources,technology,etc..etc..yet the mega rich and their incompetent inheritant offspring are just gonna live their excessive lives and watch the world slowly fall apart….Sorry I get a bit impassioned on the really big issues that the stupid just don’t get.Peace.Laters.

What should I major in in college if I want to get a job developing alternative energy technology?

Posted by admin on March 6th, 2010 and filed under alternative energy | 5 Comments »

I’d like to get a job helping to develop alternative energy sources like wave, tidal, and geothermal energy, but I’m not sure what the best college major would be for a field like that. Any suggestions?

Green DIY Energy – Why it Pays to Go Green

Posted by Zach Angelo on March 3rd, 2010 and filed under alternative energy | No Comments »

Taking on a green DIY solar project can be a massive undertaking. At first glance solar panels seem relatively easy to construct and place on a home. They look simple enough, but there is a lot going on under that casing that is holding the solar cells producing electricity. It is important therefore that some research and planning take place prior to taking on the project.

When thinking about installing solar power in a home one needs to consider the amount of energy that is required to power a home. In homes that have only electrical energy the requirement placed on the solar energy units will be much greater than on a home that has a combination of utilities in use. Either way, solar energy will significantly reduce the costs of an electrical bill.

Knowing about the “guts” of a solar panel will help an individual to decide if they want to start from scratch and build their solar panel, get a kit where most of the tedious labor is already done, or get some help or consultation in getting the solar panel installed.

Amorphous, monocrystalline, and polycrystalline solar cells all have different characteristics that make each effective for a specific use. When selecting the cell it is sometimes necessary to research solar energy or talk to someone who has experience with each of these cells and can give you details on how each will interact with your home use requirements.

Each cell produces between 1 and 2 watts of electricity. It takes a lot of these cells pieces together to run a home. When one thinks about the fact that it takes up to 36 polychrystalline cells chained together to produce enough power for a battery, one can begin to see where this could require a lot of space to provide enough electricity for a house.

There are different styles, shapes, and sizes of solar panels being developed on a regular basis. Some are designed to be ascetically pleasing when one places them on a roof, others are more functional and don’t have the flair of the fancier models. The main function of the solar panel is to protect the cells that are within it. With that in mind one can base their decision of panel on the budget they are working with and the durability of the panel they select.

After deciding how much, or how little, of the green DIY solar project a person wants to take on there are many options available. One can get a kit that contains step-by-step instructions on how to make and install the panel. If a person wants to take on more of the project and buy the materials and tools themselves they can purchase solar panel designs which will give instructions on how to build and install the panels.

Join the thousands across the nation who have built their own solar panels and are stickin’ it to the energy companies! Click Here to use solar panels to power your home and live off the grid. Visit http://getyourreviews.com/green-diy-energy for the full scoop on green diy energy.

We also think of generators as these great backup power sources used at hospitals, job sites, nursing homes, condos, malls, etc. But they are used for so many things, and their uses are limitless. The can be used if the power goes out due to natural disasters like Hurricanes, earthquakes, blizzards, tsunamis, tornado’s, that tear down power lines leaving you without electricity for an extended period. Using a portable generator will allow you to feel you have some normalcy that you otherwise would be without.

The initial investment you make when purchasing a portable generator will pay for itself tenfold in the event of an emergency, the capability to power your freezer and refrigerator will save your money from perishable foods lost. It will also give you power to use your stove or microwave to cook meals for you and your family. Another great thing about a portable generator is that you will have lights, you may also plug in your television set, or your emergency radio to know all emergency updates.

One thing you may want to keep in mind when considering whether or not you should purchase a Coleman portable generator, do you have elderly family members that live near you? Energy Drinks – Do They Give You Energy or Just a Fat

Posted by admin on March 1st, 2010 and filed under alternative energy | 10 Comments »

I receive a ton of questions about all of these new “energy” drinks that have hit the market over the last few years. They seem to be all the rage, especially with the youth, and they promise you the world with outrageous claims of all of the super energy that you are going to have, and how you’ll be crushing the competition in your sport, and so on.

    So a couple questions arise:

Are these “energy” drinks really any good for you? Do they actually increase your energy? Do they really have some sort of magical energy formula? Will they help you lose weight?

First of all, let’s look at what most of these energy drinks are usually made of. Most of them are simply carbonated water loaded with gut-fattening high fructose corn syrup, caffeine, the amino acid taurine, and a few random B-vitamins thrown in for show to trick you into thinking there’s something healthy about these concoctions.

Let’s start with the high fructose corn syrup. Well, here we’ve got empty calories that will go straight to your belly fat, and that are actually even WORSE for you than plain old refined sugar.

Ok, so you say that they have low-sugar or sugar-free varieties as an alternative to the HFCS-laden energy drinks. Yes, but now you have the problem of the harmful chemicals in the artificial sweeteners.

Another problem with artificial sweeteners is that there are some researchers that believe artificial sweetener use leads people to inadvertently consume more calories and gain more weight in the long run. I won’t go into the details on that because that would fill up an entire discussion by itself. Just trust me that artificial sweeteners and artificial chemicals in food in general, are all bad news for your body!

What about the caffeine? Well, first of all, caffeine in itself doesn’t provide “energy”. Technically, the only substances that actually provide energy are calories (from carbs, protein, and fat).

However, caffeine can be an aid for livening or waking some people up, by means of stimulating the central nervous system. Keep in mind though, if you’re a regular coffee drinker, you’re probably addicted to caffeine and probably wouldn’t receive too much benefit from the caffeine in an energy drink anyway.

Besides, instead of caffeine added to some carbonated drink, I’d rather get my caffeine from a natural source like green, white, or oolong teas, which actually provide healthful antioxidants too!

Now what about that so called magical blend of taurine and B-vitamins that they load into these energy drinks? Well, big deal…you can get taurine in almost any protein source. And the vast majority of those B-vitamins are simply coming right out into the toilet in your pee. Vitamins are best obtained naturally from real food sources, not artificially added to some carbonated drink. Your body just doesn’t use fake sources of vitamins as readily as natural sources from real food.

So as you can see, in my opinion, I give all of these energy drinks a big time THUMBS DOWN! You’re better off mixing up your own homemade energy drink with some iced unsweetened green, white, and oolong teas, a little bit of 100% pure berry or pomegranate juice, and maybe a touch of a non-denatured whey protein.

Well, I hope this article cleared up some of the confusion about these energy drinks that are being so heavily marketed these days, and will help you make more informed decisions for your health.

    Knowledge Concerning 10kw Wind Turbines

Posted by James Fraksburg on March 1st, 2010 and filed under alternative energy | No Comments »

Installing residential and small scale alternative energy measures such as 10kw wind turbines has been incentivized by government tax credits. Taking advantage of this, the consumer could end up pay little to nothing for a tool that can potentially eliminate their power bill. There are a few things to consider before installation.

Residential homes generally use eight hundred to two thousand kilowatt hours of electricity per month. For this demand, a 10kw turbine is usually sufficient. The caveat being that the region in which it is installed has an annual average wind speed above eight miles per hour. Within this range, the unit can greatly reduce or eliminate current power bills.

A common question consumers ask themselves is whether this unit is right for their particular needs and surroundings. This size turbine is ideal for residents who’s home pays more than twelve cents per kilowatt-hour and are within an area that consistently receives annual average winds above eight miles per hour. It should be kept in mind that the tower height and associated sound can be intrusive to neighbors, and the turbulence from nearby structures and trees can effect the efficiency of the unit. For this reason, it’s ideal to have a least one acre of open land on which to install the unit.

Horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWT) are the most common style, with the rotor and gearbox placed at the top of a tall pole or structure. Recommended tower height is eighty to one hundred and twenty feet. At a height of about seventy feet, rotor noise becomes very noticeable. Mounting the turbine on directly on top of buildings is usually not advised, as the sound and vibration can adversely effect nearby residents, and turbulence associated with the buildings can decrease power output.

Cooler temperatures create denser air streams compared to warmer temperatures or air at higher altitude. Less dense air requires higher wind speeds to produce comparable power. Most wind turbines begin producing power between seven to ten miles per hour. Full output is generally reached between twenty five and thirty miles per hour. Rated wind speed is about 22 miles per hour, with a cut in start up speed of eight to ten miles per hour, and a cut out speed of forty miles per hour.

Each turbine is given a power rating for it’s size considered under certain conditions. This sometimes varies per manufacturer, so it’s a good idea to look for the Annual Energy Output (AEO) when comparing units. This standard has been established by and American wind energy association, and offers a baseline for comparison, similar to the Environmental Protections Agency’s estimated gas mileage given to vehicles.

Installing the system is usually best left to professionals, especially in a residential setting. For capable individuals, installation can be performed using the right tools. The most difficult part tends to be erecting the tower. A pre-constructed tower can be reasonably hoisted into place by hinging one side of the base and raising the top with winch or vehicle. The most economical towers are guyed-latticed towers frequently used for radio antennas. Avoid using aluminum materials. These tend to crack and wear out early. Towers erected near trees or structures should stand at least thirty feet above any obstacles.

Standard 10kw wind turbines have an initial cost of twenty-eight to thirty-five thousand dollars, which includes installation. Comparing your traditional cost/demand estimate, the savings the turbine produces are used to calculate the payback period. Most system pay for themselves within eight to sixteen years, which is much less than the standard life-span of thirty plus years per wind turbine system.

Installing residential and small scale alternative energy measures for example 10kw wind turbines has been incentivized by government tax credits. We have got the inside skinny on 10kw wind turbine installation.
