Good question.

I'm European, here are a few truths that americans seem to ignore:

- European norms on pollution and safety are WAY MORE strict than american ones and not the other way around.

- Modern Diesel engines are MUCH MORE advanced technologically than any american gasoline engine, and by far. Plus they are not slow, all of them are turbo-charged and many have double turbos. I own a Alfa Romeo 147 Turbo-Diesel with 170 hp, 1,9 cc, does 6 secs from 0 to 100 km/h and at 3000 rpm (reahing aprox. 150 km/h it spends only 5.7 liters per 100 km... They are more clean and efficient than any gasoline engine.

- American cars compared to european seem to come out of the 1970's in all issues. Besides they all look the same and weirdly seem to rely on incredibly big engines to deliver the HP that any modern european car reaches with a third of the capacity in cubic centimeters.

- Driving with automatic transmissions is for old ladies and handicapped people, the only real way of enjoying and taking advantage of all the possibilities of a car is through what you call a "stick", what we european call a normal car.
References :
Hey chips ahoy, the millitary uses diesel in it's vehicles because it doesn't explode as easily as gasoline. We found this out when German tanks didn't explode as easily as a Sherman tank would(troops called the Sherman the Rhonson Lighter because it lit the first time every time). Oh yeah one more thing most millitary vehicles can run on any type of fuel that's available, including jet fuel.
References :
Our Government! That's why!!!!!! The so-called " emissions standards" of foreign made cars are not up to US standards. We all have heard about so many foreign made cars getting twice as much mpg as the American versions but they fail to pass EPA cause pollution standards are more important here in America. Some cars don't meet our National Highway Safety Standards in front end collision tests. Lots of lives would be lost if some safety features were over looked because of fuel economy. My father drove a big gas hog back in the 70's ( Plymouth Station Wagon) but gas was under a buck a gallon. He got rear ended by a 69 Pontiac Fire Bird doing 45 mph and it only bent the rear bumper and shattered the rear tail gate window. He would be dead if he got in the same accident today with some fuel efficient sub-compact. We take the good with the bad when it comes to our cars these days. 30 mpg but a 30 mph head on accident totals the car.
References :
Good Luck...

Well maybe you think diesels are great and don't care about horsepower. I do. I hate diesels and will never own one. Gas mileage is the very last thing i think about when looking at a car. And 0 to 60 is very important to me. As far as I am concerned those slow, smelly, smokey and expensive to maintain diesels can stay over there.
References :
Why can't we buy the fuel efficient vehicles that are sold in Europe by Ford, Honda and BMW.?
The same vehicles that are sold here are sold with these monsterous horsepower. Is that so the Car & Driver review doesn't call them a slug because it take 4 more seconds to reach 60 mph. Because I could care less about getting to 60mph in 9 seconds vs. 5 seconds. If I could drive past three more exits before refueling. And yes I would love for the Diesels that are sold in Europe to be sold here. It is a much more sustainable fuel than Petro (Gasoline). It burns much more efficient and with todays technology cleaner than gasoline. All in all Diesel is a much more energy effecient energy package than Gasoline. I thenk that the baby boomers will get over the 1970's Oldsmobile mistakes and jump all over a 52mpg Honda Accord. If the US auto industry wanted to make a comeback with the American public, they should offer a fuel efficient Diesel alternative power train in everything they sell, why not they do it in Europe.

Not only did the ...
Not only did the big gas company do their best to bury this technology , They also changed the composition of their gasoline.
The opel you have was designed to heat the fuel and run on the vapor.
Today's gas needs much more heat to vaporize.
Don't be surprised if when you get it running it doesn't do as well as it did when we had real gas.
