At first electric cars were actually more popular when compared with combustion engines vehicles. Unfortunately, what gave way to this preference was the cheaper price of combustion engine vehicles and the lower price of oil; both of which were championed by the major automotive companies in the United States.

Practically all of the vehicles built in the twentieth century all had combustion engines. Scientists have recently confirmed that humans are largely responsible for the planet’s global warming and a large part is due to our cars averaging nineteen pounds of carbon dioxide emissions for every mile driven. However surprising it may be, around the nineteen eighty’s the large car manufacturer GM had begun gaining attention for its focus on alternative energies in light of this looming threat. During this time, there was further pressure for auto companies to design and manufacture “clean” products. For example, the state of California had passed its “Zero Emissions Mandate,” which required there to be a certain percentage of cars manufactured that emitted significantly less carbon dioxide and pollutants. And in the 1990’s GM assigned Saturn to market the EV1, the first electric car ever designed for mass production.

The sales campaign for the EV1 specialized on a threefold consumer question: how far? how fast? how much? From the very start the car attracted what seemed to be major interest. In fact, there was a long waiting list of people who were interested in purchasing this car. Interestingly, GM did not put these cars up for purchase and were only willing to lease them. Nevertheless, the drivers were euphoric about the EV1 as it produced zero CO2 emissions and was fast and fun to drive. Clearly, these drivers actually preferred electric over combustion, despite the car only averaging 60 miles per charge. Thus, the clean, quick and sleek electric car was more desirable than its “nuclear time bomb” counterpart. So what happened to this new and promising car?

General Motors insisted that there was no strong consumer interest despite having put millions into campaign ads, and that the waiting list was not a viable source for proving actual demand. Eventually, the hype was killed with GM removing all leased EV1s from the streets and turning them into demolished cubes. In defense of these roguish actions, among many other discussions, the auto industry argued that electric cars, because they were charged with electricity produced by coal, were even more detrimental for the environment. On top of this, the oil industry supported arguments against this emerging technology, and President Bush pushed for the inefficient and impractical fuel cell and hydrogen technologies to be the wave of the future and replace combustion engines.

The alarming reality is that this energy efficient electric car was repressed by the car industry on purpose. The government and oil industry also played a large role in this. What is worse is that we as consumers did our part to support such actions by passively watching the advent of the electric car slip through our fingers. Luckily it is not too late to get this technology back and mass produce it. The EV1 was incredible and any car enthusiast would enjoy taking it out on a spin. This technology needs to be improved and mass produced for the consumer.

Think you know every trick to improving your gas mileage? Here are fuel-saving strategies that aren’t common knowledge.

To complete this How-To you will need:

Overdrive
Cruise control
Shaded parking spots
Radial tires

Step 1: Don’t sweat it

Go on — enjoy your air conditioner on the highway. Consumer Reports says that AC’s gas-guzzling reputation is undeserved. And, at higher speeds, opening the windows or sunroof can hurt fuel economy by increasing drag.

Step 2: Run on empty

Don’t fill up your tank until you’re practically on empty; the less fuel you’re toting, the lighter your car, and the more efficiently it will run.

Step 3: Turn nozzle upside down

After filling up your car, turn the nozzle upside down before you remove it from your tank. You’ll get another half a cup of gas that’s stuck in the hose.

Step 4: Tighten your gas cap

Tighten your gas cap after filling up so you don’t let any precious fuel evaporate.

Tip: Try to park in the shade. This will also help prevent evaporation.

Step 5: Use your overdrive

Put your car in overdrive for highway driving. It lowers your RPM, or revolutions per minute, which saves gas. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended speed at which you may use overdrive.

Tip: If you’re due for new tires, get radials; they improve gas mileage by two or three percent.

Step 6: Stay in your lane

Stay in one lane as much as possible; weaving uses up more gas.

Step 7: Cruise correctly

Use cruise control when you’re on a flat highway, where it can increase mileage by 7%. But don’t use it on uneven roads, where it’s not efficient.

Step 8: Turn off everything

Turn off all electronics and climate controls before you cut the engine. With the extras off, your engine won’t have to strain so hard to restart, leading to better gas mileage.

Consider online services that post gasoline prices in your area or the routes you travel. Let these services find the lowest gas prices for you instead of wasting time and money driving around town looking for the lowest prices. Incorporate your stop at the pump with your trip planning.

Consider shopping groceries or products online when checking for the lowest price. Think about having those online purchases shipped to your door. Many major retailers offer discounts online and they may also ship for free and offer many products you can not find in their local store. This can save you time and money driving around checking prices and conveniently delivered to your door. Consider doing your back to school or Christmas shopping all online to avoid long lines and congested streets.

Did you know air can improve gas mileage? Just keep your tires inflated at the proper pressure as recommended in your owners manual can give you an increase of 3%. Check your tires monthly for wear and not only will you save money at the pump but create a safer vehicle for your and your occupants. You will also save money in the long run on tires.

Refer to your owners manual to get recommendations on when your oil should be changed. Oil that goes beyond its service life could cost you in a few ways. Keeping your oil changed as recommended can give you an increase in gas mileage of 1-2%. If it is discovered during an oil change that you have a dirty oil filter consider changing it and you could possibly see a 10% increase in gas mileage.

Refer to your owners manual for tune up intervals. if your vehicle is running rough or has experienced a decrease in gas mileage you may still want to take it in to have a service technician determine if it is time for a tuneup. Finding a faulty oxygen sensor could help you realize an increase in gas mileage up to 40%.

While driving always give your vehicle some distance from the one your following. Let your vehicle coast to a natural stop while minimizing brake use. Let wind resistance reduce your speed. When accelerating no need to gun it. Set your cruise control to improve gas mileage. Not only will these methods save gas but will save you money by reducing wear and tear on your engine, brakes and transmission.

Are you trading in a gas hog for a more fuel efficient vehicle that will help you improve gas mileage? Consider comparing MPG’s or miles per gallon that is listed on most new cars sticker. Always find a vehicle that takes regular gas as instead of premium gas. Some high performance vehicles require premium gas and premium gas cost much more. If you run a car on regular that requires premium you will likely shorten the life of the engine and performance will suffer. Research pays when buying a vehicle.

At many gas stations across the country there are natural gas pumps available and seem to be in frequent use by business vehicles mostly but also some natural gas cars. Getting in on the savings of natural gas is not something reserved just for businesses trying to save money but is easily accessible to everyone and you don’t even have to buy a natural gas vehicle to use it.

After driving for 100 miles at an average speed of 60 miles per hour, the average gas mileage is 17.0 miles per gallon. Keep in mind this is estimated by the computer in the car. I do believe it is somewhat accurate because with a full tank, it took 120 miles for the fuel gage to move just a tiny, tiny bit.

Also, my car started off with 149,992 miles on it, after all of today’s driving it now has 150,121 miles on it. Pretty cool, but what’s not cool is when it will reach 200,000. Why? Let’s just say a “little” problem will occur… I’ll give you a hint: it involves the transmission and it ain’t good.
