So far the system has cost about $6,000 with everything overbuilt to be upgradeable with more solar panels as soon as we get some more funding!

Innowattech breakthrough in alternative energy from road traffic

An Israeli company, Innowattech Ltd., in cooperation with Israel National Roads Company, has recently tested the IPEG™ (Innowattech Piezoelectric Generator) system in the first of its kind pilot project along a ten-meter stretch of highway in Israel.
The technology developed by Innowattech in association with Technion I.I.T (Israel Institute of Technology) is based on piezoelectric materials that enable conversion of mechanical energy exerted by the weight of passing vehicles into electrical energy.
One kilometer of Innowattech’s generators along a single lane is capable of producing an average of 200 KWh per hour, sufficient electricity to provide for the average consumption in 200-300 households provided approximately 600 heavy trucks or buses travel through the interval per hour on average.
The harvested electricity may be supplied to various road-side applications, such as traffic lights, billboards, enforcement cameras, signs, etc., as well as transferred into the electric grid. The technology may also be used for road data collection (Smart Road).

The technology does not increase the vehicles’ fuel intake or affect the road infrastructure. It is not affected by weather conditions and allows electricity to be harvested near the end consumer.
Innowattech has also developed the technology for harvesting energy from movement of trains, airplanes and pedestrians, to be tested within months to come.

Unlike any other the smart car is still demanding our attention and proving that, despite being small they can keep up with the big dogs – in terms of what they offer us the consumer.

The Innovative Smart cars compact and distinguished appearance is still turning heads and generating interest. Since its arrival on the city car scene it has demonstrated the need for small eco vehicles, influencing the manufacture of Toyota’s IQ and the Fiat 500.

Smarts value from the very start has been to get the best out of motoring while making minimal impact on the environment. (And of course, having fun while doing it.) It is no doubt then that the Smart journey has ended up down this road!

Like your everyday necessities the Smart Electric Drive will need a full charge which takes about 8 hours, so over night would be a good time, it will then drive for up to 84 miles before it needs hooking up to the mains again. The plug is tucked away under the should be petrol cap, position… makes sense! Free electricity is provided by some London boroughs.

So there is no question that Smart have achieved there goal in being green, how about the fun aspect?

The electric motor is nippy – achieving 0-30 in an impressive 5.8 seconds, slightly less encouraging is the limited engine speed, capped to 62 mph, slightly disheartening but most likely perfect for a city car that probably wont do much motor way driving anyway.
