Wind energy has been used for many years as individuals have used wind power for sailing, wind mills for manufacturing and pumping water and more recently conversion into electricity using wind turbines. Wind power is a renewable energy that is considered a good option instead of burning fossil fuels. Of all the renewable energy sources it is the most efficient and you only need a light breeze to produce electricity.
The very first uses of wind for energy was in the form of wind mills and sailing as people have been using wind for more than thousands of years to propel ships. Windmills have also been used for many years for milling grain as well as pumping water for irrigation. These irrigation windmills was the main reason that farming and ranching could occur in the US, as there are vast stretches of land that do not have ready access to water.
The very first usage of wind to create electricity occurred in 1888. The first wind turbine was used to create hydrogen in the 1890s but it was soon converted to producing electricity. Small wind turbines are used to provide power to rural buildings and today there are larger wind farms that are being used to produce electricity for large networks. What is known as the modern wind industry really began in 1979 when wind turbines began to be regularly produced.
Wind occurs because the surface of the earth is not evenly heated, as the poles get less sunlight than the equator. This causes cooled and heated air to move which in turn produces wind. It is projected that the amount of power that could be harnessed form the wind is more than the human population currently uses. So just think about having almost cost free power.
The amount of power that is generated by the wind is dependent on the speed and as the wind speed doubles the amount of power produced increases eight fold. However there is a cap as wind turbines can only go so fast and generate so much energy. You do not need high winds at all time though as a lot of energy can still be produced with 15 mph breezes. As such, wind power is a valuable method for alternative energy.

The main issue with wind energy is storage as wind power cannot be dispatched at different times but needs to be used immediately. Many companies have looked into different types of batteries, storing it within the energy grid and even hydroelectricity. Many times surplus energy from domestic wind turbines are fed back into the electrical grid and the energy company will purchase this energy and you will receive electricity credits.
A wind turbine used to collect the power of wind will contain a rotor shaft, gearbox and brake assembly. Generally within a wind farm the different turbines are interconnecting for power collection and communication networking. Wind energy uses induction generators to collect the power and change it to electricity.
The best types of generators are doubly fed machines as they will function when errors occur within the grid. You need to be aware of the power factor, dynamic behavior and frequency constancy when a system fault should occur.
Wind power should be thoroughly considered in order to promote a greener society. Educate your children to become future scientists by purchasing them science lab equipment.
Wind turbines are machines which rotate and use ‘kinetic energy’ of the wind and convert it into ‘mechanical energy’ If this ‘mechanical’ energy is directly utilized by the wind turbines’ pump or grinding stones, this machine is called a ‘windmill’. When the ‘mechanical’ energy is changed into electricity, the machinery is called a ‘wind generator’. This type of machinery can also be known as a ‘wind turbine’ a ‘wind energy converter’ or a ‘wind power’ unit.
The method works by converting the wind into ‘mechanical energy’. When this occurs, the machines are known as wind generators, wind turbines, wind energy converters or wind power units.
Bigger turbines have all types of sensors and motor components. Gearbox pieces are part of the horizontal axes’ turbine. The blades are rotated at a faster rate with gearboxes. More efficient and powerful energy is available for the electricity components.
Customarily a tower will have ‘turbulence’ as the force at its back. Then the turbines are generally pointed ‘upwind’ of any tower. To prevent the wind turbine blades from being pushed to the tower by forceful winds, the blades are manufactured rigidly. The blades are also positioned a larger distance at the front of the tower. They are also often tilted into the wind and forward to a degree.
In spite of the turbulence problem, ‘downwind’ machinery has been build. This machinery doesn’t require more mechanisms for ensuring that they remain in line with the wind. Often blades will bend in high winds; this will reduce their wind ‘resistance’ Any repetitive turbulence can facilitate turbine failure.

Turbines that have their rotor shafts arranged in a vertical fashion are often called ‘vertical wind turbines’. The vertical turbines don’t have to be directed towards the wind to allow for large amounts of usable energy. Often, the wind directions will change so these wind turbines are perfect.
Mounting turbines with vertical axes on towers isn’t easy. Therefore, these types of turbines are typically placed closer to the base on where they remain. This can mean they are placed on a building’s rooftop or on the ground. At a lower altitude, slower wind speeds occur; less energy is obtainable for this type of turbine.
Near the ground, the air flow can be turbulent which can causes vibrations. Noises and wear on the bearings could decrease the life of the turbine and increase the maintenance. Often, when a turbine is placed on a roof, the wind is re-directed by the structure; sometimes these can double the speed of the turbine. When the rooftops’ height is 50% of the buildings’, a mounted turbine will be able to produce maximum energy from the wind and have a minimum of turbulence.

You can see many wind turbines if you drive between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, California. They were funded by the state when Gerry Brown was governor. People laughed at him for being so wind turbine conscious. He was tilting at windmills many said. But he was on the right track.
Today California still relies on the traditional method of electrical power but the wind turbine is a substantial contributor in some parts of the state. Today as we live in a time of save the environment mentality, threats of global warming, and going green the wind turbine is still making headway. Perhaps when companies can find a way to make money off them we will see more of them in use.
You can take advantage of this technology on your property if you have the right system in place. You need a tall tower and a wiring system in place in your home or business to use the kinetic energy collected by the turbine.
You will have to of course have your local power company still providing energy because you cannot get any power if there is no wind to propel your turbine. But the more wind you have the less you will have to pay your electrical company.
If your turbine produces more power than you need however the power company will buy that power from you. You need a ten mile per hour wind, which is an average, if this is to make financial sense for you to put up a wind turbine system. The noise created is slight. It is like the noise from a washing machine so you should get no complaints from neighbors for the noise.
The turbine does not interfere reception so you will not have television problems. You will need a tower of at least one hundred feet tall. So check with your local zoning commission about this before you get serious. You can pay anywhere between five and twenty five thousand dollars to install a turbine. This depends on the height and size and who you contract with for the installation.
You will have a regular maintenance cost also. But in about fifteen years you will have your investment pay for itself as you will not have to pay for power anymore. And if you plan to retire where you now live this will mean you will not have to concern yourself with power cost increases.
When you are ready to look into installing a wind turbine you can save money by installing it yourself. Or if you can deal with a company that does all the work and then offers a maintenance plan.
When you are ready to consider installing wind turbines you can save cash by installing it DIY. Or if you can deal with a wind turbine company that does all the work while offering a maintenance plan.
Global Energy Solutions
These are some global solutions to the problems of energy independence, peak oil, climate change, global warming, an inconvenient truth, resource conflict.
They include hydrogen, electric, fuel cell, hybrid, solar and wind technology, including vertical and horizontal axis turbines.
Renewable energy effectively uses natural resources such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat, which may be naturally replenished. Renewable energy technologies range from solar power, wind power, hydroelectricity/micro hydro, biomass and biofuels for transportation.
In 2006, about 18 percent of global final energy consumption came from renewables, with 13% coming from traditional biomass, like wood-burning. Hydropower was the next largest renewable source, providing 3%, followed by hot water/heating which contributed 1.3%. Modern technologies, such as geothermal, wind, solar, and ocean energy together provided some 0.8% of final energy consumption. The technical potential for their use is very large, exceeding all other readily available sources.
Renewable energy technologies are sometimes criticised for being intermittent or unsightly, yet the market is growing for many forms of renewable energy. Wind power has a worldwide installed capacity of over 100 GW and is widely used in several European countries and the USA. The manufacturing output of the photovoltaics industry reached more than 2,000 MW per year in 2006, and PV power plants are particularly popular in Germany. Solar thermal power stations operate in the USA and Spain, and the largest of these is the 354 MW SEGS power plant in the Mojave Desert. The world’s largest geothermal power installation is The Geysers in California, with a rated capacity of 750 MW. Brazil has one of the largest renewable energy programs in the world, involving production of ethanol fuel from sugar cane, and ethanol now provides 18 percent of the country’s automotive fuel. Ethanol fuel is also widely available in the USA.
While there are many large-scale renewable energy projects, renewable technologies are also suited to small off-grid applications, sometimes in rural and remote areas, where energy is often crucial in human development. Kenya has the world’s highest household solar ownership rate with roughly 30,000 small (20–100 watt) solar power systems sold per year.
Climate change concerns coupled with high oil prices, peak oil and increasing government support are driving increasing renewable energy legislation, incentives and commercialization. European Union leaders reached an agreement in principle in March 2007 that 20 percent of their nations’ energy should be produced from renewable fuels by 2020, as part of its drive to cut emissions of carbon dioxide, blamed in part for global warming. Investment capital flowing into renewable energy climbed from $80 billion in 2005 to a record $100 billion in 2006. This level of investment combined with continuing double digit percentage increases each year has moved what once was considered alternative energy to mainstream. Wind was the first to provide 1% of electricity, but solar is not far behind. Some very large corporations such as BP, General Electric, Sharp, and Royal Dutch Shell are investing in the renewable energy sector.

We all know how important it is to preserve our environment and conserve natural resources. This has led to an unprecedented level of interest in using wind power and other types of alternative energy. However, a lot of people really aren’t sure how wind power actually works. In fact, it’s actually rather simple. The kinetic energy of the wind is converted into electrical energy through the motion of wind turbines.
While wind power is a promising source for and inexhaustible supply of clean energy, it makes up only 1.5% of the total electrical supply worldwide. However, it is becoming a more important part of the global energy picture every year.
The more people become aware of the benefits of wind power and the dangers of not finding a better source then what they are currently using, the more wind power is being used. Some countries are doing far better with their usage of wind power. In Denmark, about nineteen percent of their electricity production is from wind power.
Other European countries are also getting in on wind power. Spain and Portugal produce about 11% of their electricity this way, with Germany and Ireland not far behind at a figure of 7%. Wind power is not a new technology – it has been used for centuries, though it is only in the past few decades that it has been used to generate electrical energy.
Even though a lot of people would complain about the look of the wind farms, calling them unsightly, there are many benefits that should be considered before passing up the idea simply because the wind farms do not look pretty. Wind power is renewable, plentiful, clean, widely distributed, and it does not produce as much greenhouse gas emissions then the other routes that are taken to produce electricity.
But does wind power really stop with producing electricity for our homes, businesses, and schools? The answer is no and that is because there is a chance that someday, our cars could actually run with the help of wind power. There was a super car designed in California that can drive at speeds of up to 155 miles per hour without using the typical fuel that we are all used to.
This super car starts with the help of a battery that is solar charged but it later gets its energy to run from circulating air. So since there are so many reasons for taking advantage of wind power, it is hard to see why anyone would not agree to such changes. After all, wind power could change the way we run errands and use electricity in our homes. Our planet will be saved and we will not have to suffer much for it.
Of course, those who live near the wind farms may think otherwise. There are complaints that the wind farms bring with them a lot of noise that can disturb the local residents. Then again, there are those who state that these wind farms produce less noise then a herd of sheep.
Whether wind farms or regular farms are noisier is a matter of debate. However, it is hoped that adopting this alternative energy will be done in the interests of society and protecting the environment, rather than on the basis of what the neighbors will think.
